Widgetsmith has long helped users personalize their Home Screens with custom widgets, wallpapers, and app icons. But to align with the release of iOS 18 and its focus on customization, Widgetsmith 7 brings a whole new ‘Action’ system to take these capabilities even further.
You can now design your own action buttons to be used in Control Center or in place of the Lock Screen controls, granting all kinds of new possibilities for iPhone users. Let’s take a look at how it works.
Download the app and select the Control Center filter from the main Widgets tab. Choose Add Action to get started making a bespoke button.
You’ll be asked to choose an action for your new button to trigger. Amongst other things, you can use it to call or message someone, play an album, run a shortcut, or open an app. Choose your preferred action and you’ll get the chance to personalize the look of the control. Choose a title and subtitle, plus an icon from Apple’s built-in symbols library.
To test it out, swipe down from the top-right of your screen to open Control Center. Press the + in the top left and then + Add a Control. Scroll down to the Widgetsmith section, or search “Widgetsmith” to find it faster. Select Widgetsmith and then choose which of your custom actions you want to add to Control Center.
Grab the handle in the bottom-right of your new widget to resize it. Depending on which size and shape you choose, you’ll see more or less of the text labels you set up earlier on.
These widgets can also be used to replace the Flashlight and Camera shortcuts on the Lock Screen. Long-press the Lock Screen and tap Customize > Lock Screen. Hit the – button on either of those two shortcuts and you’ll get the chance to replace it. As before, find Widgetsmith and pick one of your actions to add it.
