Due to a successful past few months – largely down to the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple has overtaken Android as the leader in smartphone operating systems.
This hasn’t happened since 2012. Incidentally, 2012 was the last time Apple decided to increase the screen size on its flagship mobile devices.
Breakdown of operating system usage
Last year, Android devices had 50.6 percent of the market share in the US, while iOS lingered at 43.9 percent. Now, iOS has pipped Android – by 0.1 percent. It stands at 47.7 percent, to Android’s 47.6. Though the gap is minimal, the jump is significant and follows Apple’s huge year end boost which saw 74.5 million iPhone units sold over the holiday period.
The figures came from Kantar Worldpanel, which tracked usage. Android still maintains significant leads in major European territories (aside from Italy), though iOS has made significant gains in most territories.
