One of our favorite podcast players, Castro, has just updated to version 3 and is now completely free to use. If you’re still using the stock iOS Podcasts app (or are new to podcasts in general,) now’s your chance to get a much more friendly podcast service.
This change comes about as Castro changes its moneymaking scheme – instead of a flat $5/£5 purchase for the app, it’s now offering all its basic functionality entirely free, with an optional paid subscription to access some extra features. These include chapter skipping, trim silence, enhance voices, and night mode. Handy for podcast enthusiasts, but certainly not essentials.
Anyone who paid full price for a previous version of Castro will get some of these premium features free forever, while new users will have to shell out $3/£3 per quarter if they want everything the app has to offer.
Castro’s triage-style inbox system makes it easy to sort through your podcasts without being overwhelmed by huge lists of episodes. It’s super easy to find new shows, the playback interface is smart, and the app will automatically download new episodes for offline listening as soon as they’re available.
If you’ve not tried it before, we’d highly recommend giving Castro a download.
