Thousands of apps and games are added to the App Store each week, and trawling through them to find the good ones can be difficult. That’s where we come in! We’ve found two new titles in particular that we think are worthy of your attention, as well as a golden oldie that we reckon deserves another mention.
App of the Week
Vimeo Create [Free, $25/£25 per month Pro tier]
It can sometimes be tough to look past YouTube when it comes to online video hosting platforms, but Vimeo is a longstanding rival – albeit a significantly smaller one. Vimeo has always angled its offering as being particularly creator-friendly, and Vimeo Create reaffirms that. Based on the work started by Magisto, which Vimeo acquired last year, the app helps small businesses create and edit professional-standard short-form video from a phone. The Pro tier grants access to a vast stock video and image library, as well as a bunch of licensed music.
Game of the Week
Eri’s Forest [Free]
Following years of over-saturation, we don’t see quite as many tower defense games on iOS as we used to. Which is a shame, because the best examples (Kingdom Rush, Fieldrunners) are among the best games on iOS. So when an exciting new take on the strategy sub-genre comes along, we tend to sit up and take notice. Eri’s Forest still has you setting defensive waypoints along a fixed path, but it does so in a twisting, stunningly detailed 3D environment that’s influenced more by nature than your typical militaristic TD game.
App Store Classic
FiLMiC Pro [$15/£15]
When it comes to shooting video to a serious standard on your iPhone, FiLMiC Pro has long been the champ. The app has won multiple awards and been used by illustrious filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh and Michel Gondry, while the developers have even popped up on stage at Apple events. It offers a staggering degree of manual control over your footage, as well as the ability to shoot in a true LOG gamma curve. You’ll pay quite a price for it, but then FiLMiC Pro is a video app that’s fit for Hollywood.
