Steady demand for iPhones
Apple has reportedly asked suppliers to deliver parts for 75 million iPhones in the second half of the year, which matches up to a very similar figure from last year. Making judgments from this kind of intel can be hit and miss, but this seems to imply that demand has plateued at a steady figure. Not bad for a year without any major updates expected.
Horizontal camera system
Speaking of this year’s iPhones, this mockup shows off one possible design Apple may be considering: a horizonal layout for its multiple rear-facing cameras. iPhone 11 is rumored to feature three distinct cameras in a rectangular formation, but we quite like the look of these (extremely unofficial) renders that put everything in a row. The upside? It looks good, and there would be room for tons more sensors. The downside? Samsung has done something similar before, so Apple may be accused of copying if it goes this route. Chances are, it won’t.
Apple denies self-preferential treatment
The Wall Street Journal posted a report in which it claimed Apple effectively monopolized the app industry by prioritizing its own apps in the search pane of the App Store, and it certainly seems like that could be happening. Apple has hit back at the claims, however, stating that a variety of factors come into play when ranking search results, including dynamic preferences that adapt based on a user’s purchase history and more. Apparently, those same criteria are used no matter who made the apps in question.
Up Next Live
Apple Music is making the jump from iOS to the real world, with a series of concerts around the world starting this month. Up Next Live is a series of weekly “intimate performances” from big stars at some of the world’s finest App Stores. Each artist has previously been featured on Apple’s monthly Up Next program. Tickets are free but distributed randomly, and sadly the opportunity to sign up has passed. But keep an eye on the Music app for more from these live performers!
